Who We Are

Colombian Visa Services is a licensed Colombian immigration law firm. Our attorneys are registered with the Colombian bar (Tarjeta Profesional) and help foreign nationals from more than 40 countries obtain Colombian visas, the Resident (R) visa, citizenship, and real estate legal support — entirely virtually, in English and Spanish.

We are not a visa agency or immigration consultant service. We are a registered law firm. That distinction affects what we can legally do for you; including giving legal advice, representing you before government entities and catching problems before they become rejections.

Who We Work With

You might be one of these people

The Retiree

You've spent time in Colombia and decided this is where you want to live. You receive Social Security or a pension, and you want to know if the Retirement Visa makes sense for your income — and what comes after.

Retirement Visa

The Remote Worker

You work for a company outside Colombia and want to live there legally without jumping through hoops. The Digital Nomad Visa was created for your situation.

Digital Nomad Visa

The Investor

You've bought property or are planning to buy in Medellín, Cartagena, or elsewhere in Colombia — and you want both the purchase handled legally and the Investment Visa sorted correctly.

Investment Visa

The International Couple

One of you is Colombian, one isn't. You're navigating the Marriage Visa for Colombia, or the K-1 or CR-1 process for the United States — or both.

Our Process

What happens when you work with us

1

Free Consultation

We start by understanding your situation, your goals, and your timeline. By the end of this call, you'll know which visa or legal pathway makes sense, what it requires, and what it will cost.

2

Document Preparation

You receive a custom checklist for your specific case. We review every document before submission — apostilles, certified translations, notarizations, and government records all need to meet exact Colombian standards.

3

Application & Filing

Your attorney prepares and submits your application to the appropriate Colombian authority — the Cancillería for visas, or Migración Colombia for cédulas de extranjería. We handle all government correspondence.

4

Approval & Next Steps

After approval, we walk you through what comes next: entering Colombia, registering your visa, obtaining your Cédula de Extranjería, and planning the next milestone — renewal, residency, or citizenship.

"Save yourself A LOT of stress and time and contact Daniela. My M1 marriage visa application was rejected twice when I attempted doing it myself on the Cancilleria's website. I just returned from Migración with my passport stamped and my cédula number, just four weeks after contacting Daniela. She and her staff speak English and I had no problems sending my documents online from Bogota to Colombian Visa Services in Medellin. Update 6/2024: my M1 marriage visa renewal also went smoothly with Colombian Visa services. Update May 2026: My second marriage visa renewal went smoothly. Very happy with Daniela and Natalia's professionalism."

"I cannot say enough positive things about Colombian Visa Services. They were extremely helpful in helping my partner and I to apply for my Colombian Spousal Visa. We tried 3 times to do this on our own and we were not successful. From the moment I made contact, they assumed the responsibility and walked us through the entire process and submitted all documentation on our behalf. I am beyond excited to report that I am now the proud holder of a Spousal Visa. I have to mention the professionalism of Natalia (Senior Attorney) who communicated with me every step of the way. I could not have done it without her."

"My experience with Colombian Visa was excellent. Natalia was very detailed and always accommodating to our needs. I had applied for a marriage visa as a foreigner from the United States and the process was very intense. Natalia kept us on track providing us great direction and was always very attentive to our needs. Needless to say I was approved and now me and my wife can enjoy our lives in Colombia. Thanks to the Colombian Visa Team!"

FAQ

Common questions about moving to Colombia

Can foreigners live permanently in Colombia?

Yes. Colombia offers a clear legal pathway from short-term stays to the Resident (R) visa to citizenship. The most common route starts with a Migrant (M) visa — Retirement, Investment or Marriage — held for 3 to 5 years depending on the category, which then qualifies you for the Resident (R) visa. After 5 years as a long-term resident (2 years for spouses of Colombian nationals), you may apply for Colombian citizenship.

What visas are available for foreigners in Colombia?

Colombia offers multiple Migrant (M) visa categories: the Retirement Visa (M-11) for pensioners, the Investment Visa (M-10) for real estate or business investors, the Digital Nomad Visa for remote workers, the Marriage Visa for spouses of Colombian nationals, and the Work Visa for those employed by Colombian companies. There are also Student, Parent, and Visitor visa categories.

How much income do I need for a Colombian retirement visa?

The Colombian Retirement Visa (previously known as M-11) requires proof of a lifetime pension income equivalent to at least three times the Colombian monthly minimum wage. At 2026 rates, this is approximately USD $1,625 per month. The income source must be a qualifying pension or retirement benefit — not employment income, investment returns, or rental income.

Can I buy property in Colombia as a foreigner?

Yes. Foreigners can purchase property in Colombia and do not need residency to do so. Property ownership alone does not grant residency, but a qualifying real estate investment, typically valued at approximately 350 times the Colombian monthly minimum wage — can support an Investment Visa application.

How long does a Colombian visa take to process?

Colombian visa applications are processed within 30 calendar days of submission to the Cancillería; in some cases it can take less than that. Our attorneys will give you a realistic timeline during the consultation based on current conditions.

Do I need to speak Spanish to get a Colombian visa?

No. Spanish language ability is not required for a Colombian visa. You will need Spanish-language documentation (translated and certified) for some visa applications, but our team can assist you with that. The one exception is the Colombian citizenship process, which includes a Spanish proficiency and cultural knowledge exam.

Is Colombia safe for expats?

Safety varies significantly by city and neighborhood — as it does in most countries. Medellín, Bogotá, Cartagena, and the Coffee Region all have large established expat communities and areas with very comfortable, safe daily life. Our clients live across Colombia and most report very positive experiences.

What is a Cédula de Extranjería?

The Cédula de Extranjería is Colombia's official foreigner ID card. It is issued by Migración Colombia after your visa is registered and approved. It serves as your primary identification for daily life in Colombia — opening bank accounts, signing contracts, accessing healthcare, and more.

Ready to make Colombia official?

Whether you're planning a move, already in Colombia without the right visa, or ready to take the next step toward residency or citizenship — we're ready to help.
