Five steps to obtain your Cédula
Receive your visa approval
The Cédula process begins only after Cancillería issues your M or R visa. With visa in hand, your 15-day deadline starts from the date you arrive in Colombia (or the date the visa is issued, if you are already in Colombia).
Book an appointment with Migración Colombia
The application is processed by Migración Colombia, not Cancillería. Appointments are scheduled online through the Migración Colombia portal. Slot availability can be tight in major cities — book as early as possible after visa approval.
Gather required documents
Your passport with the M or R visa stamp, the visa approval document, proof of address in Colombia, and the completed application form. Bring originals and one set of photocopies. Foreign documents do not generally need to be apostilled for the Cédula step — the visa application already established your status.
Attend the appointment, pay the fee, and provide biometrics
At the Migración Colombia office, you present documents, pay the government fee (approximately COP 294,000 / USD $91), and have biometric data collected — fingerprints and a photograph. The appointment itself is typically under an hour if your documents are in order.
Receive your Cédula
Migración Colombia issues the physical card within 1 to 4 weeks of the appointment. You can pick it up in person at the office where you applied. Once you have it, the Cédula is valid for the same period as your underlying visa.
