Colombia Resident (R) Visa

Colombia's the Resident (R) visa — the R visa — is the destination for most long-term residents. After qualifying years on a Migrant visa, the R visa replaces ongoing M-visa qualifying conditions with a long-term status renewed every 5 years. No employer sponsorship required, no income thresholds to maintain. Just the right to live and work in Colombia on your own terms.

Overview

Quick Answer

The R visa is Colombia's long-term Resident visa. It is a Resident-category visa valid for five years and renewable indefinitely. Most applicants qualify by holding a Migrant (M) visa continuously — without lapse — for five years. Family pathways shorten that: three years on the Marriage Visa, and just two years on the Parent Visa (parent of a Colombian citizen child). The R visa grants unrestricted work authorization, eliminates the need for employer-tied permits, and opens eligibility for Colombian citizenship. It is not citizenship itself, but it is the step immediately before it.

Who This Visa Is For

Is the Colombia Resident (R) Visa right for you?

The R visa is for foreigners who have built a life in Colombia and are ready to move past the M-visa cycle into long-term resident status (renewed every 5 years instead of annually). Common applicants include:

Long-term work visa holders

Professionals who have worked in Colombia for five or more years and want to stop being tied to a specific employer or contract.

Retirees on the Retirement Visa who have hit the five-year mark

Pensioners who came to retire, have kept their Retirement Visa valid without interruption for five years, and are ready for the stability of the Resident (R) visa.

Spouses of Colombian nationals on the Marriage Visa

Marriage Visa holders who have held the visa continuously for three years qualify for early R-visa eligibility — often with an eye toward citizenship.

Investors and property owners

Investor Visa holders who have maintained their qualifying investment and kept the visa valid without lapse for five years.

Parents of Colombian children

Parent Visa holders whose Colombian-citizen child provides the fastest pathway to the Resident (R) visa — two continuous years on the Parent Visa.

Important timing rule: the R visa application must be submitted before your current M visa expires — ideally one to three months in advance. Filing too close to expiration is one of the most common mistakes, and an expired M visa before the R visa is approved creates serious complications.

Requirements

What you'll need to prepare

Prior Migrant (M) visas and Migración Colombia movement records

Copies of every M visa held during the qualifying period plus your current M visa. Cancillería also reviews certified entry and exit records (certificado de movimientos migratorios) from Migración Colombia to confirm that time outside Colombia did not violate the presence rules of the M visa you were on and cause it to be cancelled.

Valid Cédula de Extranjería

Your foreign national ID card issued by Migración Colombia must be current and valid at the time of application.

Valid passport

Must be valid and contain your current visa. A passport expiring before or shortly after the R visa application is processed can create complications.

Proof of financial means

Documentation showing you can support yourself in Colombia. No rigid threshold — the standard is credible financial self-sufficiency. We advise on what level is appropriate for your situation.

Passport-style photographs

Current photos meeting Cancillería specifications.

We guide you through preparing and validating every required document to help avoid delays or rejections.

Requirements may vary based on individual circumstances and current Colombian immigration regulations.

A note on background checks.

A criminal background check is only a formal requirement for the pension (retirement) visa. But as Colombia tightens security and immigration screening, Cancillería is increasingly requesting a police or criminal record certificate on other visa types too — even where it isn't formally listed. We recommend having a recent one ready, apostilled and translated into Spanish, so a request doesn't hold up your application. We'll tell you whether your case is likely to need one.

Most delays happen before the application is submitted

We review every apostille, translation, and supporting document with you before filing — catching the issues that cause Cancillería to send the case back.

The Process

A clear path from consultation to approval

We guide you through every step. No surprises, no confusing paperwork, no figuring it out on your own.

  1. Eligibility review and M-visa history audit

We confirm your qualifying pathway and audit your Migrant (M) visa history to verify an unbroken chain — every renewal on time, no lapses or cancellations. Gaps or complications are identified now — not after filing.

  2. Document preparation

We give you a precise checklist. We coordinate the apostille on your background check, advise on Spanish translations, and verify your financial documentation.

  3. Application filing

We submit your complete R visa application through the Cancillería online portal before your current M visa expires. Timing is critical — we build in a buffer.

  4. Government review

the Cancillería has 30 calendar days to decide a complete application. If they request additional information, we handle that response.

  5. Visa approval

Once approved, you receive your R visa electronically. Your immigration status shifts from Migrant (M) to Resident (R).

  6. Cédula de Extranjería renewal

After receiving your R visa, you must update your Cédula de Extranjería through Migración Colombia to reflect your new Resident status.

Path to Residency

What changes when you get the Resident (R) visa?

  1. 1

    Years on M

    Qualifying Migrant Visa

    3 years on M-1/M-2 (spouse/parent) or 5 years on M-10/M-11/work.

  2. Year 0

    You are here

    Resident (R) Visa

You are here. Valid 5 years, renewable indefinitely. Unrestricted work rights.

  3. Year 5

    Colombian Citizenship

Apply after 5 years as a long-term resident (2 years for spouses of Colombians).

The shift from an M (Migrant) visa to an R (Resident) visa is more than a document update. Here is what practically changes:

Work authorization — M visa: work rights depend on your visa category. A work visa ties you to a specific employer. A retirement visa (M-11) prohibits employment. R visa: unrestricted work authorization. You can work for any employer, change jobs freely, freelance, start a business, or work in any industry — without obtaining additional permits.

Renewal cycle — M visa: renewed every one to three years, each renewal requiring re-demonstration of your qualifying basis. R visa: valid for five years. Renewal is simpler — no need to re-demonstrate your original qualifying pathway.

Stability and family — The R visa is a stronger foundation for dependent family member applications. It also provides more immigration stability if your circumstances change — job loss, divorce, or business dissolution that would affect an M visa do not automatically affect an R visa.

Citizenship eligibility — Only R visa holders can apply for Colombian citizenship through naturalization. The M visa — regardless of how long you hold it — does not directly open citizenship eligibility.

Presence requirements — The R visa is not a set-it-and-forget-it status. Extended absences from Colombia — typically two or more continuous years outside the country — can jeopardize your R visa. If you plan to live outside Colombia for extended periods, discuss this with us before you go.

Important to Know

What most buyers don't know

Pathway 1 — Five years on any Migrant (M) visa (standard)

The default pathway. After holding a qualifying Migrant (M) visa continuously — without lapse or cancellation — for five years, you can apply for the Resident (R) visa. Applies to the Work Visa, Investor Visa, Retirement Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, and other M-category visas.

Pathway 2 — Three years on the Marriage Visa

Foreign spouses of Colombian nationals who hold the Marriage Visa qualify for the Resident (R) visa after three continuous years — not five. The Marriage Visa is issued to legally married couples (civil or religious marriage recognized in Colombia).

Pathway 3 — Five years on the Permanent Partner Visa

Foreign partners in a registered unión marital de hecho with a Colombian national qualify for the Resident (R) visa after five continuous years on the Permanent Partner Visa. A separate visa from Marriage — with a longer path to R because the underlying union is not a formal marriage.

Pathway 4 — Two years on the Parent Visa

If you are the parent of a Colombian citizen child and hold the Parent Visa, you qualify for the Resident (R) visa after two continuous years — the fastest R-visa pathway. The child's Colombian citizenship must be documented (birth certificate for a minor, cédula for an adult child).
