Migrant Visa (M)
Colombian Migrant Visa (M Visa)
The M visa is for foreigners building a long-term life in Colombia — through work, investment, retirement, marriage, or study. Time on an M visa counts toward the Resident (R) visa. Find the right sub-type for your situation.
Overview
The M is for genuine long-term ties
The Colombian Migrant (M) visa is for foreigners who want to establish long-term residence in Colombia with genuine ties to the country — through employment, investment, retirement income, family relationships, or study. M visas are typically issued for one to three years and are renewable. Most foreigners pursuing long-term life in Colombia will hold some form of M visa.
The most important thing to know: time spent on an M visa counts toward eligibility for the Resident (R) visa (the R visa). Time on a V (Visitor) visa does not.

V Visa (Visitor)

From M to R
From M visa to the Resident (R) visa
After holding an M visa for the required continuous period, holders can apply for the R visa directly. The qualifying period depends on the pathway:
- Marriage/family pathways (M-1, M-2): Typically 2 years of continuous M visa residency
- All other M pathways (investment, retirement, work, study): Typically 5 years of continuous M visa residency
Once you hold the R visa, it is renewable every five years. It grants the right to live and work in Colombia without a separate work permit, and long-term R visa holders may eventually qualify to apply for Colombian citizenship.
After Approval
Cédula de Extranjería — required within 15 days
All M visa holders must register for a Cédula de Extranjería (foreigner ID card) within 15 days of visa approval. This is a legal requirement, not optional.

Frequently asked questions about the M visa
What is the Colombian Migrant (M) visa?
The Colombian Migrant (M) visa is a long-term residence visa for foreigners who have a substantive connection to Colombia — through employment with a Colombian employer, investment, retirement income, marriage to a Colombian national, family relationships, or enrollment in an accredited Colombian academic program. M visas are typically issued for one to three years, are renewable, and count toward eligibility for the Resident (R) visa.
What is the difference between the M visa and the V (Visitor) visa?
The most important difference is how each visa category affects your path to the Resident (R) visa. Time spent on an M (Migrant) visa counts toward the qualifying period for Colombia's R (Resident) the Resident (R) visa visa. Time spent on a V (Visitor) visa does not count toward residency, regardless of how long you hold it. If you intend to live in Colombia long-term and eventually obtain the Resident (R) visa, you need an M visa.
How do I know which M visa sub-type applies to me?
Your M visa sub-type is determined by your primary connection to Colombia. If you are married to a Colombian national, that is M-1. If you are purchasing real estate or making a business investment, that is M-10. If you are retired with qualifying pension income, that is M-11. Start with the sub-type table on this page, then review the individual service pages. If your situation is complex, an immigration attorney can identify the best pathway.
Does the M visa lead to the Resident (R) visa?
Yes. The M visa is the primary pathway to Colombia's R (Resident) visa, which is the Resident (R) visa. After holding your M visa for the required continuous period — typically 2 years for marriage and family pathways, 5 years for other pathways — you can apply for the R visa. The R visa is renewable every five years and grants the right to live and work in Colombia without restrictions.
How long does it take to qualify for the Resident (R) visa on an M visa?
The required continuous residency period depends on your M visa sub-type. Marriage and family-based pathways (M-1, M-2) typically require 2 continuous years on the M visa. All other M visa pathways — including investment, retirement, work, and study — typically require 5 continuous years. Gaps in your residence or visa lapses may reset or interrupt the qualifying period.
Can I work in Colombia on any M visa?
Not automatically. The right to work in Colombia on an M visa depends on your sub-type. The M-type work visa explicitly authorizes employment with a specific Colombian employer. Other M visa sub-types — such as M-10 (investor) or M-11 (retiree) — may or may not authorize employment depending on the specific authorization on your visa. Holders of the R (Resident) visa may work without restrictions.
Can I travel outside Colombia while holding an M visa?
Yes. Holding an M visa does not prevent you from traveling outside Colombia. However, extended absences may affect the continuity of your residency for purposes of qualifying for the R visa. If you are building toward the Resident (R) visa, be mindful of how long you spend outside Colombia each year, and keep records of your entries and exits.
What is the Cédula de Extranjería and when do I need it?
The Cédula de Extranjería is Colombia's official identification card for foreign nationals. All M visa holders are legally required to register for and obtain a Cédula within 15 days of their visa being approved. It serves as your primary identification document in Colombia for banking, contracts, healthcare, and other official purposes. Failure to register within the required window can result in fines.
